No fewer than thirteen people perish and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.
A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the national leader.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his government's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant growth of its duties in public infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid rate, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested pending a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
